What makes you, you? Well, a lot of things! Your perspectives, aspirations, talents,
00:13
fears, signature dance moves, relationships with the people you love, maybe even your
00:18
green thumb or aversion to sesame seeds. But there are 2 things that are incredibly
00:23
important to who you are: your mind and your behavior. Together they encompass what you think,
00:28
feel, and do. And while your mind and behavior can seem mysterious, there's actually a lot we
00:33
know about them. Thanks to psychology, the scientific study of the mind and behavior.
00:38
Over the years, psychologists have done many experiments – some that are really clever and
00:43
some that, well, they shouldn't have done, if we're being honest. Through this work, they've
00:49
discovered – and continue to discover – important patterns in the ways we behave and think.
00:54
Turns out, we have a lot in common when it comes to how we respond to what's around us,
00:59
how we learn, what happens when we feel emotions, who we admire, and much much more.
01:04
So that makes psychology a powerful way to understand human nature – one that’s relevant
01:08
to you personally and to all of us. Thanks to psychology, I know why hip-hop makes me happy and
01:14
how social media keeps us scrolling endlessly. Psychology gives us valuable insights on what
01:20
it's like to be a person, and that can help us better relate to others with
01:23
empathy – and to ourselves with self compassion. And psychology isn't just about explaining us to
01:29
ourselves and getting along more harmoniously. It can also be about leaning into the mysterious.
01:34
Like, take dreams. We’ve pondered them for millenia and studied them
01:39
for decades, but psychologists still have different theories about what they are.
01:43
One theory is that dreams can be like a form of therapy, a safe space for emotions to play out.
01:49
Or you might prefer the theory that says dreams are just electrical pulses firing
01:54
and they don’t have deeper meaning. We’re still figuring out what dreams really are!
01:57
And wide-open questions like this are part of what makes psychology so exciting. Like all of science,
02:03
psychology is an ever-evolving realm of knowledge and possibilities. And I'll
02:08
be your guide to the riches of this realm, taking you through fascinating
02:11
and heady topics like motivation, stress, consciousness, intelligence, and personality.
02:18
Hi, I'm Deja Fitzgerald, and welcome to Study Hall Intro to Psychology!
02:23
I consider myself a bit of a try-hard, so I’ve never pursued my interests in a half-hearted
02:28
fashion. I have a bachelors degree in Psychology and a Master of Education in Student Affairs. And
02:33
since apparently I couldn't stand the idea of making a sizable income too early in my career,
02:38
now I’m working on my doctorate in Counseling Psychology at the University of Tennessee.
02:42
Throughout my educational career, I’ve also had various professional opportunities. Like I’ve
02:47
had leadership roles with the American Psychological Association's Society of
02:51
Counseling Psychology. And I’ve also been involved with the Recording Academy and the
02:55
hip-hop scene in the Pacific Northwest. Central to all of my work is the pursuit
02:58
of well-being, sense of belonging, and intercultural development for
03:02
minoritized and marginalized populations in a variety of settings. That includes
03:07
intimate relationships, organizations, the music industry, and more. In my spare time,
03:12
you can usually find me playing a video game, hanging out with one of my many pets,
03:16
or aggressively narrating shows on HGTV. Together, we’ll go on a journey through
03:21
topics ranging from the history of psychology to positive psychology and see the myriad
03:26
ways that psychology can help us to know – and wonder – more about what makes us who we are.
